Charles Cahill

My name is Charlie Cahill, and I have lived in Nunavut for the past ten years, and I still work 3-4 months each year in the central arctic part of Nunavut, in the community of Gjoa Haven, located about 300 km above the Arctic Circle.

Charlie CahillI worked for the Government of the NWT and the Hamlet of Gjoa Haven for 8 years as a community development officer, working with local hunters and trappers groups, Inuit arts and crafts Associations and many Inuit businesses. I also served on the local Education Committee, the Hamlet Council, various community Boards and agencies, and recently ran a close but unsuccessful race for MLA in the first ever Nunavut Territorial election.

My presentation delivers current and accurate information about the creation of Nunavut Territory and the lifestyle of the Inuit people who live there. The Inuit represent 85% of the population of Nunavut, and the presentation delivers an overview of the life in Nunavut today, and insights into the transition that Nunavut is experiencing.

I have a home in Nunavut and many close Inuit friends, and so the presentation portrays Northern life with a positive spin. The Inuit as a culture are resilient, resourceful, gregarious and a truly unique component of our multi-cultural Canadian identity.
